SUMMARY:Virtual Community Labour Market Consultation
DESCRIPTION:You’re Invited to a Labour Market Community Consultation Led by the Labour Market Group of Renfrew and Lanark Counties   \nThe labour market is changing rapidly with new trends that have evolved since we spoke last year. Canada’s unemployment rate is gradually increasing\, particularly for young people\, but there continues to be widespread labour shortages in some sectors\, such as health care.    \nInflation has been slowed\, but the cost of living remains high for housing and food\, resulting in more labour disruptions as collective bargaining focuses on the rising cost of living.    \nJoin the Renfrew-Lanark Labour Market Working Group for one of four community consultations as we tackle the tough questions of how rural areas can address their workforce needs now and into the future.   \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:AI's Impact on Today's Students and Tomorrow's Workers
DESCRIPTION:Presentation on Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work \n Monday\, February 26 at 11:00 a.m. – Pembroke Waterfront Campus \nAlgonquin College and the Lanark-Renfrew Labour Market Group are pleased to invite you to a special presentation by technology journalist Jared Lindzon on “The Future of Work-Artificial Intelligence and its Impact on today’s students and tomorrow’s workers.” This presentation is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Monday\, February 26th and can be accessed in person at the Pembroke campus or online. \nYou can register at this link: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.ca/e/the-future-of-work-artificial-intelligence-tickets-788097971247?aff=oddtdtcreator \nMore information below on the presentation and the presenter: \nUntil recently our understanding of “work” remained largely unchanged since the industrial revolution. Many of the standards and conventions that were established over 100 years ago faced their first real challenge in the wake of the pandemic. Now\, as organizations continue to play catch up\, even more disruption is on its way. That’s because artificial intelligence is poised to have an even more dramatic impact on how\, where\, when and why we work. As a freelance journalist who reports on the “Future of Work” for some of the biggest news outlets in Canada and around the world\, Jared Lindzon is well positioned to provide clarity on how the workplace has evolved in recent years\, and where it’s most likely headed next. He believes that as we enter the next chapter in its evolution\, we can learn much about what will come next by exploring what came before. \nBio:  \nJared Lindzon is a freelance journalist and public speaker based in Toronto. Though he covers a wide range of subject areas — including tech\, entertainment\, and business — Lindzon has emerged as one of the country’s leading voices on the “Future of Work.” Beyond his regular columns in Fast Company\, The Globe & Mail\, BetaKit and TIME Magazine Lindzon’s reporting has also been featured in The New York Times\, the Guardian\, Fortune Magazine\, Rolling Stone and The BBC\, among others. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Rural Economic Development Session with Dr. Ken Coates
DESCRIPTION:Ken Coates will be talking about Rural Futures. Over the past few decades\, rural and small-town Canada have faced immense strains. The migration of young people to the cities\, and changes in agriculture\, mining\, and manufacturing have undermined local economies. But rural Canada will not go quietly\, but instead is determined to preserve its special place within Canada well into the 21st century. Defining the lifestyles and economic prospects of rural and small-town Canada requires creativity\, community spirit\, and a full understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie before us all. \nKen Coates is a rare public commentator who brings a deep understanding of past and present realities together with compelling ideas about Canada’s future. His passionate and highly engaging talks have captivated diverse audiences across the country\, from college administrators and economic development officers to Aboriginal entrepreneurs and community activists. Ken is Canada’s Research Chair in Regional Innovation and brings his experience in East Asia and around the Circumpolar world to bear on his understanding of Canada’s strengths and weaknesses. Ken combines irreverence\, insight\, and a sense of humour in his conversations about the issues that matter most to Canadians.

SUMMARY:How to Thrive or Survive in the Millennial Age? With David Coletto
DESCRIPTION:There are powerful new forces at work in the modern workplace\, a dynamic driven by the intersection of disruptive technology and a new generation of employees who were raised differently\, have different values and different expectations. \nMisunderstanding these new realities will represent increasing peril for businesses\, employers\, politicians\, and governments. Millennials make up the largest portion of the working-age population representing more than 9.5 million Canadians. \nThis revolutionary\, generational change represents an enormous risk but also creates an incredible opportunity for the companies and organizations that are positioned to capitalize on it. \nAs one of Canada’s foremost experts on generational change and youth\, David has spent almost eight years as the founder and CEO of Abacus Data trying to understand his generation and working with brands\, associations\, and public sector organizations to reorient themselves for this millennial-dominated world. He’s convinced that a generational analysis is critical to understanding the forces at play in the workforce. \nThrough an engaging\, data-filled workshop\, David will argue that a generational lens is needed by all organizations\, large or small\, who are seeking to understand the dynamics at work in the market.”
