Mississippi Mills, located just 45 minutes from downtown Ottawa, is a charming amalgamation of the communities of Almonte, Appleton, Blakeney, Clayton, Ramsay, and Pakenham. Since its formation in 1998, Mississippi Mills has grown to a population of 14,740 as of 2021, marking a 12% increase since 2016.
Labour in Mississippi Mills is centered around trades, transport, equipment operators, sales and service occupations, business, finance, and administration roles. The top industries include construction, health care, and public administration. The town is home to various unique retailers and world-class artists, contributing to its cultural and economic vibrancy.
In recent developments, Ottawa Valley Grain Products received a $3 million investment to establish a new commercial grain mill in Mississippi Mills. This project will modernize local grain processing capabilities and strengthen the town’s agricultural sector.
Tourism is a vital part of Mississippi Mills, known as “mini-Hollywood North” with 25 films shot in Almonte since 1988. The town offers numerous attractions, including historical sites, maple syrup festivals, skiing, theatre, hiking, art galleries, and the Puppets Up festival drawing visitors year-round. The Ride the LT program, launching on August 8, will enhance local transportation, providing weekly trips to Almonte and Carleton Place for just $2 per person.
Mississippi Mills also has a notable immigrant population, with 1,060 foreign-born residents as of 2021, primarily from the UK, USA, and Germany. Recent immigrants mainly hail from Syria, the USA, and India, enriching the town’s cultural diversity.
