There are many opportunities to increase your knowledge and to support your career ambitions. From academic upgrading to apprenticeships and post-secondary studies, our region offers some of the best learning opportunities in Eastern Ontario.
Academic upgrading programs help prepare adult learners for employment or entry to skills training, grade 12 equivalency, and post-secondary programs. They are offered by local school boards, colleges and community groups with the goal of preparing workers to participate in our local labour markets.
Apprenticeships are hands-on training opportunities that allow you to both gain employment in the skilled trades and learn important skills that will support your career development moving forward.
Literacy and Basic Skills
The Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) program helps adults in Ontario to develop and apply communication, numeracy, interpersonal and digital skills to achieve their goals. The LBS program serves learners who have goals to successfully transition to employment, post-secondary, apprenticeship, secondary school, and increased independence. The program includes learners who may have a range of barriers to learning.
Government Health And Safety Policies
Health Canada contributes to occupational health and safety (OHS) issues by coordinating the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and monitoring workplace radiation exposure. Health Canada also provides employee assistance services and occupational health services to federal employees. Labour legislation falls primarily under the jurisdiction of Canada’s provinces and territories. However, the federal Labour Program is the occupational health and safety (OHS) regulatory authority for workplaces designated under federal jurisdiction (e.g. mining, energy).
